My Online Bookselling Business

An abbreviated Story of My 17 Years of Earning and Learning

The book lover in me prompted me to open and nurture my 17-year side-hustle as an online bookseller. I invested a lot of time, work and money in it, and now it’s part of the story of my life.

Certain books brought in a tidy profit. Making it a self-reinforcing enterprise, with those occasional exciting returns.

But I was no Jeff Bezos. His company, Amazon, opened for business in July of 1995. It started as an online bookselling site.

In 1998, Amazon extended beyond books and started selling music CDs, and by the following year it had added more product categories, such as toys, electronics and tools.

In 2000, the company introduced a service allowing individual sellers and other outside merchants to peddle their products alongside Amazon’s own items.

In 2003, when I started my business, it seemed the up-and-coming thing for independent booksellers like me.
